Open Flu Clinics – Age 60 to 64

Open Flu Clinics for age 60-64 year group on Sunday 6th December at Kirkintilloch TownHall

Open flu vaccination clinics are running for patients aged 60 to 64 (or born before 31st March 1961) who have not yet had a flu vaccine. Please attend Kirkintilloch Town Hall on Sunday 6th December between 1 and 430pm.

All patients will receive a Scottish Government letter inviting them to attend however it has been confirmed to the Flu Planning team that these letters will not go out until Wednesday this week and as such may not be received in time for the first clinics.

Although the clinics are running on a drop in basis each practice has been given a preferred time slot to advise patients of in order to help manage attendance throughout the weekend.

You should not attend unless you have received either :

  1. a letter from the government OR
  2. a text message from Woodhead Medical Practice

Car Park Management

From November 2020 there will be a change in how the Health and Social Care Partnership manage their car parks around the Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre. This has been put in place to safely manage the demand on car parking spaces to ensure that service users, visitors and staff have access to dedicated parking areas when attending the centre.  Service users and visitors will now have access to the car park at the front of the building which has been earmarked for those attending the centre for clinics / appointments and for business with the HSCP. Entry will be through a barrier system which will lift up when entering the car park. A code will be required to exit the car park. This code will be provided to service users / visitors at either reception or by the service they are visiting and the number will be changed regularly

Further information

  • A fob will be required to enter the staff and pooled car areas.
  • For deliveries, taxies and couriers, there will be an intercom system on the barrier so that the receptionist can allow them access to the car park.
  • The Health and Social Care Partnership are aware that local residents may use our car park out with normal working hours, however please note that the car park is for use of service users, visitors and staff only. The code will change on a weekly basis. We would be grateful therefore if residents did not park in the controlled entry car park area as they will not be able to exit this area without the most recent code.

Q. How do I book my appointment at the Flu Clinic?

We will contact you. If you are age 18 to 64 and in an “at risk” group the practice will phone you to organize a time for your flu vaccine on one of the above dates. Please let us know if you do not wish to have a vaccine when we call.

Q. What happens when l attend the clinic?

On the day of your appointment please attend the surgery a few minutes before your allocated time. The injection is given to your upper arm. Please make sure you are wearing either a short sleeve top or loose fitting jumper under your jacket to allow access to this area.

If you are unwell on the day of your appointment, please do not attend and advise the surgery the following Monday so we can arrange another appointment.

Person wearing face maskPlease wear a face covering and ensure social distancing from others.

Arriving at the practice :

The main reception at the Kirkintilloch Health and Care Centre will be closed, so attend at the side entrance (to the Left of the sliding doors). Please use the hand sanitizer on entering the building.

When you attend the practice, you will be greeted by a member of staff who will confirm your name and appointment time.

You and others who have the same appointment time will be directed to the reception desk (please remember to continue to socially distance) and advised to stand in a numbered space in the waiting room. The number of your space is the number of the room you will attend for your vaccine.

About your appointment :

At your appointment time, a member staff will direct you to attend for your vaccination. You must go to the room number you were allocated.

Please remove your jacket and take all your belongings from the waiting area. To reduce the risk of infection, there will be a one way system in the practice and you will not be allowed to return to the waiting room after leaving.

On entering the clinical room, please ensure you have rolled up any long sleeved tops. The clinician will confirm your name, date of birth and check that you are well and have no temperature. They will then administer the vaccine. After your appointment you will be directed out of the practice via the fire door by a member of staff. Please make sure you leave the premise promptly after your vaccine to avoid crowding outside the practice.

Q. Can l bring my family with me to the appointment?

No. Please attend the clinic alone. We anticipate the clinic will be very busy and we are trying to maintain social distancing to ensure safety for both patients and staff.

Q. What happens if l feel unwell after my vaccine?

Please let us know immediately if you feel unwell after your vaccine, so we can take you to a private area to recover and monitor you.

Q. Can l speak to the doctor or nurse about another matter when l attend?

No, this will not be possible as flu vaccine appointments are only 5 minutes long. If you wish to speak to the doctor or nurse about another matter, please contact the surgery during normal working hours.

Q. What if l am late for my appointment?

If you are late, please speak to a member of staff when you attend.

Q. What if l am ill on the morning of my Flu vaccine?

Please do not attend for your vaccine if you are unwell. Contact the practice and we can organize another date for your vaccine.

Q. I don’t want to have the vaccine done.

Please let us know if you do not wish the flu vaccine when we call you to book an appointment.

Q. Can l just turn up at the clinic for vaccine without appointment?

Twechar Satellite Surgery Consultation

CONSULTATION ON THE PROPOSAL TO REMOVE SATELLITE TWECHAR WEDNESDAY MORNING SURGERY FROM LOCATION WITHIN ROOM IN TWECHAR HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE AND THEREAFTER PRACTICE SOLELY FROM OUR PREMISES IN KIRKINTILLOCH HEALTH AND CARE CENTRE, KIRKINTILLOCH

As you may already be aware, Woodhead Medical Practice consults from two locations, our main site at Kirkintilloch and our satellite surgery at Twechar on a Wednesday morning.

The Practice is currently seeking permission from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde to consolidate service provision to its Kirkintilloch premises.  This would require the removal of our Wednesday morning surgery from Twechar. All Twechar patients would continue to receive medical care from the surgery in Kirkintilloch. There are no plans to withdraw GP services from patients in the Twechar area or remove any patients from our practice list. The proposal is to have our service located wholly in Kirkintilloch, where a full range of health care services are available. At present, all Twechar patients need to attend the Kirkintilloch surgery for many conditions, such as chronic disease reviews, blood taking, wound review, ear syringing, cervical smears and minor surgery as we cannot provide these services from Twechar as the premises are not suitable.

On reviewing reasons why patients had attended the Twechar surgery, we noted that 75% of patients who had been seen there could have been managed by telephone or video appointments with a doctor, and avoided the need to have to attend the surgery. Many problems can be dealt with by telephone or video consultation, therefore reducing the need for a face to face appointment.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have had to suspend services at the Twechar surgery in the meantime in line with current guidance.

In order to assist in the wide ranging consultation process that is required prior to such a decision being approved, the Practice has been asked to undertake a survey of those patients who currently attend at Twechar. Patients who are resident in Twechar have already been sent a questionnaire which they have been asked to complete and return as part of the consultation process. The consultation process will close on Monday 24th August 2020

The consultation process will also include the local MP, MSP, Councillors, Public Participation Groups and Local Community Groups.

If you have any queries about the closure of our satellite surgery, please direct them to Mrs Pauline Wilmoth, Practice Manager.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Protecting Vulnerable Patients

Shielding Guidance for high risk vulnerable patents.

On Monday 16 March the UK government announced a package of measures, advising those who
are at increased risk of severe illness because of COVID-19 to be particularly stringent in following
social distancing measures.

Patients who have specific conditions are likely to be at highest risk from COVID-19.

These conditions include

  • Solid organ transplant recipients
  • People with specific cancers
  • People with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radical radiotherapy for lung cancer
  • People with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment
  • People having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer
  • People having other targeted cancer treatments which can affect the immune system,
  • People who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs.
  • People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD (Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • People with rare diseases and inborn errors of metabolism that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as SCID, homozygous sickle cell disease)
  • People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection
  • People who are pregnant with significant heart disease

Over the coming days, councils and health professionals will be working together to keep in
contact with you to make sure you have access to food supplies and any medicines you need. If, at
any point, you think you have developed symptoms of coronavirus, such as a new, continuous
cough and/or high temperature (above 37.8 °C), seek clinical advice by phoning the NHS on 111.
Do this as soon as you get symptoms.

This is different to the advice that we are giving people who do not fall into the very high risk
group, who are only being asked to contact the NHS if they feel very unwell. We are asking you to
get in touch sooner than we are advising everyone else.
